VA BIRDers,
Due to hurricane Isabel, the Kiptopeke Challenge will be rescheduled to Sept 27
(Sat). We at the CVWO hope that you will be able to participate in the KC on
that date.
Despite our best thoughts and hopes, Isabel has not turned from the coast and
is headed inland. Starting at dawn today, all federal refuges and state parks
along the Virginia coast were closed. We have received guidance that it may
not be possible for these locations to open until Sunday, under the best of
scenarios. Also, communications from these locations will likely be
compromised by the effects of Isabel and so it will not be possible to judge
there availability for the event in the near term. Finally, extreme rain
accumulations are predicted for the coastal areas which can give rise to many
problems with roads, electricity, etc. Therefore, it was decided that the
risks far outweighed the benefits for holding the KC this weekend.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to those in the areas closest to the Isabel's
path.
