On June 22 I took my family's small motorboat out in the James River on a
mission to try and count the DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS nesting on the power
line towers which parallel the James River Bridge. The weather proved
otherwise however, and I was forced to turn back after counting birds on
only the first two towers. Fortunately, today (June 26) the weather and the
river cooperated and I was able to complete the count as best as I could.
The totals from the two days are as follows:
DOUBLE CRESTED CORMORANT-FLYING/SWIMMING-24
DOUBLE CRESTED CORMORANT-ON TOWERS-338
DOUBLE CRESTED CORMORANT-TOTAL-362
DOUBLE CRESTED CORMORANT NESTS-125
I also saw:
OSPREY-16
OSPREY NESTS-5
LAUGHING GULL-4
GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL-9
RING-BILLED GULL-3
MALLARD-10
I do not know the timetable of the cormorants' nesting, but I saw many nests
which still had an adult bird laying on them and others which held nestlings
being attended to by parents. Most of the cormorant activity was on the
towers flanking the main channel and the small boat channel. Thanks!
