Another "ditto" for the arrival of Chimney Swift (one over Rayfield's
Pharmacy) and Ruby-throated Hummingbird (male at the feeders here; my first
but not the town first). Interestingly, either the Ruby-throated has
displaced the Rufous, or the Rufous's last day was yesterday; she wasn't seen
all day today and only for a bit yesterday. The Painted Bunting was seen
yesterday around 1330 but not today. The annual arrival date for Chimney
Swift is 14 April in 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2002. That's not an "average"
date -- that's the date they appear to arrive each year. Remarkable! Not as
consistent were the backyard Purple Martins -- invariably, at least one scout
is there by 29 March, sometimes more. This year, they all arrived today,
over 2 weeks late, even though on the next blocks, the martins were in by 2
April.
