The invasion of northern hummer migrants has begun. This morning my deck
was alive with hummers around the two feeders that I have up. Until today,
there have been only about 4 or 5 hummers here all summer, probably the
nesting pair or pairs. They have been seen only early in the morning or late
in the evening at the feeders.
As I was refilling the feeders this morning, the birds were flying
around my hand as I took them inside to clean and fill and brought them back
out to hang. I suspect they flew in during the night and are very hungry
this morning.
I will put up 2 more feeders out of sight of the ones on the deck so
the one fat alpha male can't guard them all. He is clever about positioning
himself so he can observe as many feeders as possible from one perch.
