I spent most of the day birdwatching on both tracts of the Hog Island WMA in Surry. Although my trip was cut short due to an approaching thunderstorm, I was still able to spot 53 species of birds. Although I did not see anything too unusual, highlights included: seeing a SNOWY EGRET and BLACK SKIMMER standing next to four CASPIAN TERNS on the edge of a lake, a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER (as I have never seen one there before), a very cooperative YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT, and a surprised female WOOD DUCK surrounded by ducklings who proceeded to put on quite a show of being flightless to protect her young. Also, I found it strange that all five of the ORCHARD ORIOLES I saw had the plumage of an immature male. As always I had a great experience at this location, as I hardly saw another human being and saw alot of great birds. Take it easy folks.
