I live just West of that area; west of Dulles Airport and South
of the Greenway (near Brambleton). Over the last several days, we
have had several dozen Great Blue Herons flying over each
morning; several strings each day of 3-4-5 herons. On morning
walks with my dogs, I have found several roosting trees with
3-4-5 herons waking up and taking in the morning air. Mid-day,
there have been a few GBH's roosting in the trees around the lake
behind our house; or dive-bombing each-other when they go down
into the lake for food.
Yep ... they are moving through the area right now.
[Mid-summer, we have 2 or 3 pairs setting up house-keeping within
a few miles of our house; although I have never yet found a
nesting tree. Mid-winter, we had 1 in our area excepting on the
very coldest of cold weather snaps].

Subject: [va-bird] Great Blue Migratory Movement?
Commuting east from western Loudoun today on Rt 50, Rt 606, Rt 28
and the Dulles Toll Road, I noted 4 "groups" of great blue
herons; did anyone else today seen increased numbers flying over?
Three birds were heading north near my home a few hundred feet
off the ground. One or two regularly visit the ponds and sewage
plant nearby, but three, flying together, seemed unusual.
Behind Dulles Airport on Rt 606 and coming north from ponds on
the airport's southwestern margin, I saw 7 great blues heading in
the general direction of the Potomac at an altitude of perhaps
200 yards. On the Dulles Toll Road just east of the World Gate
complex, three more great blues were flying northwest over the
toll road. Near my office, on the east side of Reston and fairly
close to the Wiehle Ave/Sunset Hills junction, 6 great blues were
flying at about 200-300 yds above the ground. They too were
heading north and somewhat west.
