Commuting east from western Loudoun today on Rt 50, Rt 606, Rt 28 and
the Dulles Toll Road, I noted 4 "groups" of great blue herons; did
anyone else today seen increased numbers flying over?
Three birds were heading north near my home a few hundred feet off the
ground. One or two regularly visit the ponds and sewage plant nearby,
but three, flying together, seemed unusual.
Behind Dulles Airport on Rt 606 and coming north from ponds on the
airport's southwestern margin, I saw 7 great blues heading in the
general direction of the Potomac at an altitude of perhaps 200 yards.
On the Dulles Toll Road just east of the World Gate complex, three more
great blues were flying northwest over the toll road. Near my office, on
the east side of Reston and fairly close to the Wiehle Ave/Sunset Hills
junction, 6 great blues were flying at about 200-300 yds above the
ground. They too were heading north and somewhat west.
