FYI VA-Birders,
I monitor the FL listserves and thought this post (among several others)
discussing near-shore shearwaters might be of interest to those birding the
coast. This might be a local FL event, but it is possible that the same
phenomenon will be observed off our coasts very soon. Ponce Inlet is just
south of Daytona Beach.
Thanks,
Jay Keller,
Arlington

Subject: Re: [BRDBRAIN] Shearwaters.Ponce Inlet
I just came back off the Inlet for another quick look. There are 40+
shearwaters moving offshore. Most seem to be milling around, not heading in
any particular direction. Some are feeding. More are spending time floating on
the water. I found 8-10 Greater Shearwaters floating at the mouth of the
Inlet. Several actually came floating into the inlet with the tide. Another
four were floating right off of the jetty rocks on the Atlantic side of the
north Jetty. The winds have died down to 8-11mph.
This all has the earmarks of June 2005 when we had 300 Greater Shearwaters
come ashore exhausted and emaciated and brought to the Marine Science Center
bird hospital.
I just talked with our bird rehab staff and we have just gotten in several
Greater Shearwaters, and we are getting a rash of calls of birds washed up on
the beach.
