This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon
Naturalist Society. This tape was made Tuesday, Nov 16, at 7:30 p.m.
Top birds this week are PACIFIC LOON and CAVE SWALLOW in VA.
Other birds of interest include HORNED GREBE, waterfowl, raptors,
COMMON MOORHEN, shorebirds, GLAUCOUS and ICELAND GULL, RED-HEADED
WOODPECKER, AMERICAN PIPIT, sparrows, SNOW BUNTING, PURPLE FINCH and
PINE SISKIN.
A PACIFIC LOON was located at about 11 am at Kiptopeke SP, Northampton
Co, VA on November 13 between the parking lot and the concrete boats.
On November 14, up to four CAVE SWALLOWS were sighted from the hawk
watch at Kiptopeke SP.
Three HORNED GREBES were seen at Occoquan Bay NWR, Prince William Co,
VA on November 11. One HORNED GREBE was seen at the Public Landing,
Worcester Co, MD and another at Black Hill Regional Park, Montgomery
Co, MD on November 14.
Waterfowl numbers are on the increase throughout the area with
sightings of GADWALL, NORTHERN SHOVELER, NORTHERN PINTAIL, CANVASBACK,
REDHEAD, RING-NECK DUCK and COMMON GOLDENEYE. Two WHITE-WINGED
SCOTERS were picked out of large flocks of passing SCOTERS on
Assateague Island, Worcester Co, MD on November 13.
On November 11, a RICHARDSON'S CACKLING GOOSE was relocated in a field
by a farm pond on Route 156 just south of Route 155 in Harford Co, MD
and another was relocated on Old Frederick Road in a farm field just
south of Camden Meadows Court in Howard Co, MD on the same day.
The Washington Monument Hawk Watch, Frederick Co, MD reported a
NORTHERN GOSHAWK on November 11. The Kiptopeke hawk watchers were
delighted to see a NORTHERN GOSHAWK and three GOLDEN EAGLES on
November 14. In addition, a PEREGRINE FALCON kept the ROCK PIGEONS in
motion out on the concrete ships. Another NORTHERN GOSHAWK was seen
at the Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve, Loudoun Co, VA on November 13.
The Worcester Rarities Roundup on November 13 included a PEREGRINE
FALCON on its usual perch at the Ocean City inlet water tower.
Another PEREGRINE FALCON was spotted from the Choptank River Bridge at
the Dorchester/Talbot Co line, MD on November 13 and 14. A MERLIN was
present at the National Arboretum, DC, on November 14.
A COMMON MOORHEN was observed swimming with waterfowl in the fresh
water ponds at Flag Ponds Nature Park, Calvert Co, MD on November 11.
A HUDSONIAN GODWIT and a WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER were noted at the
Hurlock WWTP, Dorchester Co, on November 12. A few WHITE-RUMPED
SANDPIPERS were mixed in with a small flock of DUNLIN at Blackwater
NWR, Dorchester Co, on November 14. A small flock of PURPLE
SANDPIPERS was noted on Poplar Island, Talbot Co, MD on November 11.
Eight PURPLE SANDPIPERS were huddled on the rocks of the CBBT on
November 13.
A GLAUCOUS GULL and two ICELAND GULLS were discovered in the ORV Zone
of Assateague Island on November 13.
A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER provided a nice surprise for a birder at the
Quantico Marine Corps Base on November 10. A juvenile RED-HEADED
WOODPECKER and two AMERICAN PIPITS were spotted at Kenilworth Park, DC
on November 11. RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS visited yards near Randolph Rd
at Georgia Ave and in Darnestown, Montgomery Co. A RED-HEADED
WOODPECKER was seen at Dyke Marsh, Fairfax Co, VA on November 14. The
two RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS remain at Huntley Meadows Park, Fairfax Co,
VA with a sighting on November 15.
A trip to Occoquan Bay NWR on November 11 turned up 10 sparrow species
including VESPER, SAVANNAH, FOX and LINCOLN'S. Another trip to
Occoquan on November 14 observed 8 sparrow species including FOX and
SAVANNAH. A FOX SPARROW put in an appearance at a feeder in Easton,
Talbot Co, MD on November 12. A good number of FOX SPARROWS were
singing at the Blue Mash Nature Trail, Montgomery Co, and six more
were seen at Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve on November 13. Two
LINCOLN'S SPARROWS were banded at Kiptopeke SP on November 12 - the
fifth and sixth for the season. A LINCOLN'S SPARROW was seen at the
Dulles Greenway Wetland Mitigation Project, Loudoun Co, VA on November
13. WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS were seen on Bell Road just west of the
Ridgley WWTP, Caroline Co, MD on November 13.
A SNOW BUNTING was seen in the middle of the road at Swan Harbor Farm
Park, Harford Co, MD on November 11. A SNOW BUNTING put in an
appearance at Blackwater NWR on November 13. Sandy Point SP, Anne
Arundel Co, MD hosted a SNOW BUNTING and two LAPLAND LONGSPURS on
November 14.
A pair of RUSTY BLACKBIRDS was a pleasant surprise at Fort C. F.
Smith, Arlington Co, VA on November 12. A RUSTY BLACKBIRD visited a
yard in Cecil Co, MD on November 13. Three RUSTY BLACKBIRDS were seen
at Occoquan Bay NWR on November 11 and one was still there on November
14.
PURPLE FINCHES and PINE SISKINS appeared at feeders and parks
throughout the area.
A pelagic trip is scheduled for Dec 11 out of Lewes, DE. For more
