For the second year in a row the Fort Bennett Eagles Nest has failed. She laid
eggs, set on them, and I believe chicks were produced. But apparently for the
second year in a row they could not get enough fish to feed them. Until the
chicks died. This I surmise due to the presence of vultures after the adult
Eagles left the nest.
Last year I had many friends who like to fish complaining that all spring and
Into summer they could not find any fish in the Potomac. I was eventually told
that this was because it had been a very wet spring and thus there was lots of
runoff, which silted the water plants where the young fish developed, and thus
rendered the Potomac a fish desert, so to speak.
I don't know if that's the same case this year. I do know that last year the
Osprey at Belle Haven Marina were a month late in laying, and they only had one
chick. Normally they have two and often three. By the end of the season, my
fishing friends were catching fish again. At that point it did seem that the
Osprey, instead of bringing ridiculously tiny fish back to the nest, which I
photographed, started to bring more normal sized fish to the chick. But it was
touch and go there for a good while.
