Jay Keller and I went out to look for the usual and unusual in our
"backyard" today - mainly the coastal portions of Fairfax and Prince William
Counties and nearby Fairfax Co areas that are just barely "piedmont" - Sandy
Run Regional Park and the Lorton area. We tallied about 94 species the
following highlights.
Top bird today was a Western Grebe, in Belmont Bay, just east of the Rt 1
Occoquan River Bridge and viewed from the newish Belmont Marina off Express
Rd in Woodbridge. The bird was near the Fairfax Co side of this area
slightly west of due north from the marina. In the scope the eyes were all
surrounded in black that went up to the crown, the bill was long and dull
yellowish white, neck was white on the front and sides and black on the
backside from the crown to the back, and the back was gray black. A fine
bird! I hope it can be seen by others, but it was actively diving and we
lost it after a few minutes.
Other highlights today were Short-eared Owl in the power line cut off
Peniwell Ave, No. Saw-whet Owl at Sandy Run Regional Park, Blue-headed
Vireo, House Wren and Nashville Warbler at Julie Metz wetlands, Common
Ravens over the Vulcan Quarry at Lorton, American Pipits on the Fairfax
County-Lorton landfill cap along with Savannah Sparrows and Eastern
Meadowlarks, and Rusty Blackbirds over Lorton and at Occoquan Bay NWR. I
list totals for some selected species encountered below (mainly waterfowl
and sparrows) - the waterfowl show was excellent in Belmont Bay, Pohick Bay
and off the Great Marsh of Mason Neck.
