LATE BIRDS:Â Â Â I was going to report a surprise visit from a single Pine
Siskin on April 21--a surprise because I hardly saw this species here this
winter. But then at 3:19 PM today, there were 5! Pine Siskins here at the
feeders!!!!! On April 19 had a late junco here; its relatives had already
flown the coop some time ago. Today (April 23) a female Purple Finch is here.Â
  FOS BIRDS, BUTTERFLIES, OTHER INSECTS, ORCHID!   April 20: FOS Wood
Thrush in yard (had heard one singing down the road a few days earlier). Â
April 23: FOS FEMALE hummer at feeder. FOS male had arrived April 10,
earliest ever!!!!! April 23: Also had a FOS House Wren here today!!!!! That's
not a common sighting in my yard. It was in my Trumpet Honeysuckle trellis
singing and it hunted on the ground among the fading daffodils in the same
garden. Barred Owls are keeping me busy with their "discussions" (I have a
nesting pair). The Carolina Wrens are feeding chicks on my porch. The female
phoebe is incubating on the gutter downspout at the south end of my porch, not
far from the wrens. Towhees calling and singing every day; don't know yet where
this pair has a nest in the yard.  April 6: FOS Gray Treefrog calling. April
17: FOS Silver-spotted Skipper feeding at Gill-over-the-ground. April 20: FOS
JUNIPER HAIRSTREAK feeding at Pussytoes in my driveway!!!!! FOS Zebra
Swallowtail flying in yard. Also Eastern-tailed Blue. April 21: FOS Duskywing
flying in yard. April 20: FOS Six-spotted Tiger Beetle. April 23: LILY-LEAVED
TWAYBLADE ORCHID just coming up. This delightful species showed up several
years ago in my driveway! I've moved it a few times over the years, so I'm
thrilled to know it has once again survived a transplanting.
