I tried my luck this morning on the CBBT Is.1 and 4. Not too much at Is.1;
highlight there was 1 Juv. Yellow Crowned Night Heron.
On to Is. 4; Watched with for about 2 hours ( 6:45 am - 9:00 am ) on Is 4.
Birded with Brian from Williamsburg (Taber? Apologies if I am incorrect, I
did not ask for your last name; too early in a.m. etc!). Ned Brinkley's
synopsis from yesterday evening seemed to representative of this morning. We
observed similar species (no tropical). 4 or 5 BLACK TERN, 3 LEAST TERN, 2
BLACK SKIMMER (Ad. & Juv.), 2 or 3 SEASIDE SPARROW on the island, small
passage of BARN SWALLOW c. 30 with a few PURPLE MARTIN, 4 SPOTTED SANDPIPER,
1 or 2 SANDERLING were the highlights. Nothing ventured ... .
BTW Is. 3 was closed toady for construction. Also, Police Officer at toll
plaza was appreciative of "pre" photo-copied permit, registration, and
driver's license. Have originals ready also.
I then birded Eastern Shore of Virginia NWR (boat ramp end). 3 TRiCOLORED
HERON, 4 BLACK CROWNED NIGHT NIGHT HERON (Juv.), 1 YELLOW CROWNED NIGHT
HERON (Juv.), and decent looks at CLAPPER RAIL.
After that I trawled the fields along 645 (Arlington Rd.), 644 (Custis Tomb
Rd.) and 600 between Willis Wharf and Oyster for shorebirds. Observed same
species as Bob Ake with the addition of 1 UPLAND SANDPIPER in the field that
is at the Junction of Arlington Rd and Custis Tomb Rd. Also about 20
SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER along RTE. 600. Seemed that BLACK BELLIED PLOVER and
SEMI-PALMATED PLOVER were the more frequent species today.
At Willis Wharf I had 3 WHIMBREL, and at Oyster 12 MARBELD GODWIT, as well
as 20 or so AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER, + 30 odd WILLET.
Also noted flocks of BROWN-HEADED COWBIRDs (350), and a single flock of c.
75 BOBOLINK on RTE. 600.
Good day out despite the rain. I was more focused on looking for shorebirds
on the eastern shore, and so did not look for or look in habo for passerine
migrants.
