I birded eastern Prince William Saturday, taking part in a count
organized by Jim Waggenner. I birded Quantico Marine Base, Quantico
Creek area, Leesylvania SP, Metz wetlands, and Occoquan NWR. Part of
the time I birded with Bev Leeuwenberg and Larry Blair. Weather
conditions stank for much of the morning (I had never birded by umbrella
before), and I knocked off around 2. I tallied 110 species despite the
conditions. Highlights were 3 whip-poor-wills at Quantico, black tern
off Occoquan NWR, northern harrier at Metz, Cooper's hawk, 22 warbler
species including Tennessee, Canada (everywhere, in good numbers),
hooded, Wilson's, chestnut-sided, and chat (singing at 4:30am),
rose-breasted grosbeak (3 in one tree), warbling vireo, both tanagers,
both orioles, eastern wood pewee, swamp sparrow, savannah sparrow, and
Swainson's thrush. Last Friday I had a white-crowned sparrow at my
feeder. Today (5/11), I had a least flycatcher in my yard and a
Lincoln's sparrow at Metz.
I don't know if Jim is going to post the final count, but I believe
around 140 species were counted in all. In addition to the areas I
birded, parties also visited Veteran's park, Prince William Forest Park,
and parts of Occoquan NWR not generally open to the public.
