Bev Leeuwenberg, Darleen Jarry, and I visited Craney in the am. When we
arrived we were told at the office that the roads were terrible and treacherous
without 4-W Drive - and they were - and that 2 cars had already gotten stuck
that
day. We carefully ventured in along the West Perimeter Rd., went about half
way up and then discretion got the better part of valor, or something like
that, and we turned back and parked at the very beginning - and then walked up
to
the first empoundment. The water levels are very, very high, leaving only
narrow mud flats, but there are lots and lots of shorebirds and terns around.
They're just very hard to get to and see unless you're willing to do a lot of
walking. In our limited time and viewing area we saw many Western and S-P
Sandpipers and S-P Plovers, several Pectoral Sandpipers, Greater and Lesser
Yellowlegs, 1 Least Tern, 1 Red Knot, 1 Bank Swallow - and many Caspian and
Royal Terns.
Before you go you might want to check with the office re road conditions,
especially if there's any more rain.
