Adam D'Onofrio and I visited Craney Island today (9/13) and gave it a pretty
good scrub. We birded Craney from 8:00-3:00 during which time we had 22
species of shorebirds. The best birds were a Hudsonian Godwit on the south
side of the middle cross-dike, 2 Am. Golden Plover (one just south of the Hud.
God, and one north of the middle cross-dike), 1 Buff-breasted Sandpiper along
the north perimeter road near the northwest corner, and 4 Am Avocet in the
northeast corner. We also had 50+ Stilt Sandpiper, 250 Lesser Yellowlegs, 70
Greater Yellowlegs, 25 White-rumped Sandpiper, 12 Short-billed and 1
Long-billed Dowitcher. A Peregrine Falcon spent part of the morning keeping
the birds shuffled and a Merlin was seen harrasing shorebirds on the James
River side of the island. Lots of terns were present ( mostly Caspian with a
smattering of Royals, and 1 ad Gull-billed feeding two young-uns).
Good Birding,
