Hello birders,
The Clay-colored Sparrow is still showing well at Laurel Hill Equestrian Center
(Fairfax County) as of 12:45 PM today (Saturday). Will post photos with our
eBird report later.
We first picked it up with a mixed sparrow flock in the small island of shrubs
in the W side of the parking lot. It then moved with the flock to the N end
just beyond the parking lot; and when we left, it was perched up in open view
on a shrub just outside the NE corner of the lot. We waved to two other
intrepid birders there as we drove away.
Immediately surrounding the parking lot in all directions were several
sub-flocks, lots of sparrows:
many White-crowned and White-throated, adults and immatures of each
M-F pair of Towhees
Junco
several Song
We did not search for other species; but the number of active sparrows over a
wide area, during the snowfall, makes it seem likely there are more there.
