A single Cave Swallow was over the field immediately north of the Eastern
Shore of Virginia NWR today at about 12:10 or so, observed for several
minutes. A search of fields north of the refuge to Oyster produced about
8000 Tree Swallows, as well as one each of Northern Rough-winged and Bank
Swallows, both quite late. Two unidentified Petrochelidon swallows were seen
at Seaview, near the post office there.
A strong flight of Red-tailed Hawks, Accipiters, and vultures (with a few
Bald Eagles) was underway for much of the morning on the east side of Rte 13,
on SSW winds. Large numbers of Dark-eyed Juncos are around (about 400
today), along with hundreds of bluebirds and Myrtle Warblers, thousands of
robins, and smaller numbers of pipits, larks, and Palm Warblers.
