I decided to address this to VA Birds in case anyone else is interested.
I've had luck feeding Carolina Wrens from my suet feeders, but I use the
recipe that is listed on our Buchanan County Bird Club web site.
http://www.bcplnet.org/birdclub/suet.htm They seem to like this mixture. I
think it's the peanut butter that they go for. I've noticed that many birds
don't seem to like the commercial suet cakes. I sometimes place some of the
homemade mixture near our fire wood rack on the porch because the wrens like
to search around the wood looking for food. Sometimes my wife or I place a
tray of the suet mixture on top of the wood stack just outside our kitchen
window. We often have two Carolinas feeding at the same time. When the
ground is covered with snow they will definitely find it. I also found out
by accident that small pieces or scrapings of meat will also bring them in.
You can place the food in any protected area. Carolinas like to go back in
the darker more weather protected places.

The bird books indicate that they can fail to survive hard winters in the
northern part of their range. I wonder if that applies to the mountains of
Virginia?
