Rick,
I don't know about the Carolina Wren's hardiness in the mountains; they
certainly survive the winters here in Northern Virginia (Gardening Zone 7).
Their favorite food is insect larvae and spiders gleaned from plants,
around lawn furniture, decks, etc. They *love walnut pieces and mealworms
(not necessarily together). They will also eat sunflower seeds and perhaps
others.
In our suburban yard, they tend to be winter residents only, heading for
parks and woodlands when the house wrens return in the spring. They are
charming little birds and very curious about everything; in fact, our
Christmas card shows photos of one going into a tennis shoe on our deck.<g>
