Yesterday, Monday, there was a huge concentration of Northern Gannets, most
of them between island 1 and Virginia Beach, seen from the C.B.B.T. that I
loosely estimated at 5,700. There was continuous plunge-diving, very
impressive, that reminded me of World War II videos of naval battles when
scores of bullets hit the water around ships simultaneously. Also present,
right next to the rocks on the NE side of island 1 was a Razorbill with a
Horned Grebe. In the area were 125 Surf Scoters, 30 Brown Pelicans, and 375
Double-crested Cormorants. This was from 4-4:30 P.M. At Willis Wharf at
5:15 P.M. right in front of the post office were 151 Marbled Godwits, 120
Willets, 35 Dunlin, and 35 Short-billed Dowitchers plus 2 female Common
Goldeneyes. I was surprised to see so many shorebirds at what looked like
full low tide since whenever I am there under those conditions most of the
