The most recent VSO field checklist (March 2006) lists the Ring-necked
Pheasant (as well as the Green Pheasant) as a "Category 6" species which
is defined as "An introduced species that formerly maintained
self-sustaining wild populations, but no recent records." The last
record presumed to be a wild bird reported in the
Amherst-Bedford-Campbell counties region was in 1970. We still do have
an occasional sighting, but these birds are thought to be recent escapes.
