I led a field trip at Lynchburg College's Claytor Nature Study Center in
Bedford County (Site 11 on the Peaks of Otter Loop of the VA Birding & Wildlife
Trail) this morning as part of Botanicos, celebrating the 80th Anniversary of
their Ramsey-Freer Herbarium. The herbarium is the largest private one in the
state and was founded by Dr. Ruskin Freer who was also a well-known Virginia
birder. We saw/heard 33 species during the hour long walk. Highlights were
seeing bobwhites on the drive to Claytor and then hearing them after I arrived;
hearing an Acadian Flycatcher; hearing these warblers: Prairie, Common
Yellowthroat, Hooded and Yellow-breasted Chat; and seeing 2 Grasshopper
Sparrows near Claytor later in the morning. The complete species lists for the
Claytor walk and later birding the surrounding area follow.
