A couple of good resources/stories about "our" birds.....
As flocks of Dark-eyed Juncos, White-throated Sparrows, Ruby-crowned
Kinglets and Yellow-rumped Warblers descend upon us for the winter from
the Boreal Forest of Canada, some of you may be interested in learning
more about conservation of the places where many of these birds are
born. The Boreal Songbird Initiative has focused on that critical forest
area of Canada and parts of the US where a great percentage of our white
throats, kinglets, warblers, thrushes and ducks nest. See:

The theme of the '06 International Migratory Bird Day will be the
boreal forest as our major bird nursery, an area undergoing rapid change
due to timber and peat harvesting, mining and climate change. To view

Another great resource which has a general focus on Piedmont SC natural
history but often has a much broader focus is the regular newsletter
from Hilton Pond, a privately managed reserve and research center in
South Carolina. Take a look and spend some time reading this week's
feature to get an interesting if worrisome look at what some neotrop
songbirds look like when they set down some 400 miles off the Nicaraguan
coast on the Colombian island of San Andres. Bill Hilton reports on the
diversity of neotrops that dropped out there over the past three weeks -
the group Bill was working with added 7 species new to the island during
the course of an intensive training effort for Colombian bird
conservationists.
