Viet Nam was not a winnable war. LBJ knew it. RMN learned it. It was a civil
war we took over from the French. As with Afghanistan, it was a family fight.
It was created by the Yalta conference, which arbitrarily divided countries up
between Communist and noncommunist areas. Korea took--the people fought for
their government--Viet Nam didn't.
Afghanistan is a family fight that has been going on for more than 150 years
with occasional breaks for exhaustion. Imperial Russia, Iran/Persia, the
British Empire and, now, the US have all had proxy wars there or have directly
gotten their noses bloodied. It was called "The Great Game." Look it up.
As far as Viet Nam, read "Lady Bird Johnson, Hiding in Plain Sight." There are
multiple direct quotes about why LBJ enlarged our activities even though he
knew we could not win.
Both situations were quagmires.

Not talking about corruption, which of courses was rampant talking abut
Congress not honoring their their agreement. It has been said by a relative of
mine Vietnam was a civil was fought by one group of farmers against the other
The before mentioned was made a person with 3 tours in Vietnam the last one as
commander of a battalion. So much for LBJ's war.

Read the Pentagon papers and think corruption in VN's government. The people
did not fight for the "democratic" government because they were given nothing
to fight for. Eric

Viet Nam was lost because Congress would not fund South Vietnam enough though
we were winning the war.

I happen to agree with much of what was said. I cannot, however, ignore the
parallels with Viet Nam. In both cases, we have been in unwinnable wars. In
Viet Nam, we declared victory and came home. Here, both Trump and Biden have
recognized that any agreement with the Taliban is simply papering over the fact
that they will take over the country when we leave. The best we can do is
provide asylum the translators and others who have worked with us there. Eric
