Hawaii
By Ulysses Loe

Hawaii. Once a tropical paradise. Now a barren wasteland.
The year was 2057. Hawaii was the top vacation destination on Earth. It had
lush green fields that grew an assortment of tropical fruit. Beaches that
stretched for miles. Ocean as far as the eye could see. Thousands of Palm
Trees.
An assortment of Resorts and Hotels. Beautiful coral reefs. Amazing waves
that crashed upon the shore. A perfect climate. It was paradise. It was
heaven.
It was never expecting disaster.
2057 brought with it a terrible drought. The soil could no longer retain
moisture. The salt of the seawater was killing crop. Palm Trees withered, their

leaves turned brown. The fruits ruined. Economy took a heavy hit. Farmers
didn't know what to do. With the agriculture on life support, help was sought
out, and found.
A German scientist by the name of Manfred Radius was working on technology of
Re-Forestation. He was trying to make plants grow in the harsh soils of the
Arizona desert and had experienced moderate success. When one day he claimed
that he had a breakthrough.
When the Hawaiian's heard of Manfred's breakthrough, they mistook it for
success, and hired him to come to Hawaii in hopes to restore the agriculture
that had taken such a heavy hit. Manfred agreed, bringing his resources and his

team to Hawaii. They began running tests and Manfred was convinced that he
could restore the land. With the help of the government Manfred began "crop
dusting" the land all over the Hawaiian Islands. The natives were confident
that
their land would return to its once fertile beauty.
However, this was not the case. Manfred did not help, as much as wreak more
havoc on the land than what had already been done. His chemical which was
supposed to restore, was in fact nothing more than a poison. The land and all
of
its properties, slowly died. The crops dried out to a scorched shade of
yellow, the palm trees became brittle and fell, the reefs broke off sending
massive chunks onto the shores, the soil completely lost its ability to retain
moisture and turned tan, the fish washed onto the beaches in hoards.
Instead of spectacular restoration, all that came was utter devastation.
The government asked "Why?" The natives cried. Manfred went into seclusion
trying to figure out what went wrong. Before he ever could however, a group of
farmers took revenge on him and ended his life. Then the group went after the
rest of Manfred's team, one by one, until there was only one left. He
managed to escape and returned to the United States with one conclusion. Due
to the
effects of the chemicals used throughout the islands, Hawaii would never be
able to grow any living thing from the land, ever again. Also, due to the
chemical properties, none of the people that were on the island, would be able
to leave.
Not only did the chemical kill the land, it was also slowly killing the
people.
The assistant was quickly quarantined, along with the few people that were
vacationing there at the time. While in quarantine, the assistant developed a
vaccination that was given to those that the quarantined had come in contact
with, as well as the quarantined itself. However, not enough resources were
available to vaccinate all of the natives. They only vaccinated the children.
The children were the future, and would be able to continue on longer than the
elderly and the adults. Since the assistant was unsure how long the effects
of the poison would take on the human body, the natives lived out full lives.

In reality, the assistant was completely mistaken - the chemical had no
effect on the human body. The assistant concluded that any offspring bared by
those who were vaccinated would carry a mutation, harmless to the carrier,
however would be lethal to anyone they came in contact with. The government
handed
down a swift punishment, all those who were quarantined would not be allowed
to procreate, and those left on the islands, would never, ever, be able to
leave. None of them, or their children, or their children's children.
And so it has been ever since.
The government came up with an ingenious plan. They turned Hawaii into a
modern day Alcatraz. They built the first Hawaii Island Prison on Lanai in
2058.
Any prisoner sentenced to 10 years or more in any of the states were shipped
off to the islands to serve out their sentence. The U.S. aligned with other
countries in agreement to send their prisoners to Hawaii as well. More and
more prisons were built. Castles in the middle of islands.
As they built more prisons, the government relocated the natives to The Big
Island. After awhile, all of Lanai and Molokai were prisons, as well as half
of Kauai. The only non-natives left on The Hawaiian Islands, were the prison
transporters, and the prisoners. The prisons did not have any guards. The
government did not fear prison breaks, for a couple of reasons. One, the
prisoners were afraid of becoming poisoned if they did escape. Two, they had
nowhere
to go, they were on islands.
Now the prisons are used galaxy wide. Both human and alien prisoners alike
call Hawaii their home. The prisons are much more technologically advanced than
they were when they were first built. And although large advances in the
medical field have been made, scientists and doctors are unable to locate the
mutation in the natives to treat it, because, unknown to them, the mutation
does not exist. The scientists are also unable to test the theory that if the
natives come in contact with humans, it will cause death, because everyone,
even the prisoners, are inoculated. And so it is.
Hawaii. Once a tropical paradise. Now a barren wasteland.
