"Over the Rainbow" Lt. Cmdr Sydney Morgan It had been several days since Syd had seen Tawny or heard from her. She had no idea what was going on in her head. She so desperately wanted to see her, yet she wasn't sure how to go about it without pushing her away. With all her pent up energy she needed to do something, somewhere. The Holodeck. Changing into something less confining then her uniform she left her quarter's and made her way to the holodeck. She entered a code, designating a particular program and proceeded to enter the holodeck. As soon as she was free of the doors she heard them close behind her. Now it was just her and the program. Walking further in Syd could feel the cool air and taste the salt in the breeze off the water. She had tried to replicate the program she had first shared with Tawny at Quark's but knew she didn't have all the detail's the same. That didn't matter, what matter was that it reminded her of the time they had spent talking and getting to know each other. Looking up Syd saw not a cloud in the sky. Instead it was filled with stars. Millions of them, or so it seemed. She found a tree and sat down against it. Feeling the bark against her back actually felt good. The ground was soft, with a slight dew. That didn't seem to matter to Syd either. In fact she laid down upon it to get a better look at the sky. Looking up she tried to find the big dipper, a constellation Tawny had shown her. After much searching she found it, along with it's smaller version. She was amazed at how many different constellation's one could find if looking hard enough. She never really paid much attention to them while working on the bridge as she was always working on something else. As she lay on the grass she realized or rather was beginning to understand why Tawny loved looking at the stars. You could imagine yourself being someone different on each one. Each one represented a new start, a new beginning. They represented hope. That somewhere there was a place for them, in the galaxy. Perhaps it was on this ship, Syd hoped so. She put her hands behind her head and just stared at the stars. Watching as one occasionally seemed to be falling. She had heard of an old tradition of wishing on a falling star. She closed her eyes and let her mind fill with the wish she wanted more than anything. After opening her eyes she saw a rainbow in the sky. It was the most beautiful thing she had seen, again reminding her of an old earth song. It seemed fitting at the time and she started to hum it. Somewhere over the rainbow Way up high, There's a land that I heard of Once in a lullaby. Somewhere over the rainbow Skies are blue, And the dreams that you dare to dream Really do come true. Someday I'll wish upon a star And wake up where the clouds are far Behind me. Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. Somewhere over the rainbow Bluebirds fly. Birds fly over the rainbow. Why then, oh why can't I? If happy little bluebirds fly Beyond the rainbow Why, oh why can't I?
