Daisy noticed the smell first. As soon as she entered the small ship her nose was filled with the distinct tang of blood – and a large quantity of it. Runtawr led her directly to the rear of the vessel where a makeshift pallet had been laid out, laying on it was another felinoid. Her head and pinnae had been hastily wrapped with a gauzy dressing but bright red blood still nearly covered the cloth. Much of her dappled fur seemed clotted with blood though a quick visual inspection showed no other obvious wounds. What was obvious however was her gravid belly. Tricorder readings picked up four faint heartbeats fading fast. The felinoids eyes fluttered open and she moaned. Fear clouded her eyes and she tried to move away but only succeeded in howling in pain. Runtawr rushed to her side and licked the side of her face comfortingly “Don't be afraid Sssufarn, this is their healer.” He said to her, adding something in his language that the UT did not yet have the base to translate. “I need to get her to our sickbay immediately.” Daisy interjected. “She's lost a lot of blood and the kittens are in danger too.'' Runtawr moved out of her way as she rushed her patient out of the small ship on an anti-grav stretcher and headed for sickbay “I need a sterile containment field immediately, Dr. T'Sul, I need you're capable hands, and three to assist. We need a large incubator in the field and someone needs to hang a pint of synthesized felinoid blood and a bag of Ringer's Lactate.” Daisy loudly called out her orders as she entered sickbay with the injured Felusian. Medical personnel began to scurry about to carry them out and prep as needed. Entering the field with the Vulcan doctor, Daisy passed her hands through the infra-red sterilizing beam. A trio of medical personnel were already inside and ready for further instruction. Daisy turned her attention to her patient trying to reassure her. “It's going to be okay Sssufarn, We are going to do our best to take care of you and the kittens.” Sssufarn moaned and weakly shook her head. She managed a hoarse whisper. “If you must choossse healerrr, ssssave them and let me die.” Daisy gave her what she hoped wasn't too stern of a look. “No one is dying here. Y'all will be fine.” She insisted to the Felusian, a hint of a Southern accent surfacing in her voice. Before Daisy or Dr. T'Sul could do or say anything else, Sssufarn lost consciousness and the vital signs monitors on the biobed dipped. The team sprang into action along with the doctors. Daisy and Dr. T'Sul examined the head wound and applied the osteo-regenerator on the highest setting and then sealed the rift in her fur with the dermal laser. Even with the transfusing blood and their skillful treatment the vital signs on the biobed continued to sink lower. “We need to get those kittens out now. She's already weak and they are putting stress on her systems.” Daisy announced and T'Sul nodded in agreement. With Dr. T'Sul monitoring the mother, Daisy directed a technician to move the microtransporter into place and one by one she beamed the tiny kittens into a waiting incubator. She then instructed the nurses in the swift removal of their cauls and the drying of their fur. Their efforts were rewarded by tiny mewing and squirming from all but one of the kittens. Daisy lifted the silent kitten and listened – she had a faint heartbeat but was not breathing. She briskly rubbed her fur. She was cool to the touch and there was no response. “One cc of Acalfazene stat!” She called out to a nurse who rushed a hypospray over to the doctor. Sssufarn had awoken and looked over at Daisy, who was working on the still kitten, and let out a pained cry. “Ssshe's dying, I can feel herrr ssslipping away.” Daisy administered the hypo and then bent over and covered the kitten's nose and mouth with her mouth and blew in a breath of air. She massaged the kitten some more and repeated the procedure, the kitten remained still but she didn't give up. She called for another cc of the resuscitative drug and administered it. “Replicate an O2 mask in a size to fit her muzzle.” She ordered and Nurse Tanaka hurried to comply. She placed the tiny mask over the kitten's face and started a flow of oxygen. She wrapped the kitten in a warming blanket and brought her over to Sssufarn trying to hold back her own tears. As she settled the kitten into her mother's arms she finally shuddered and took a breath. A muffled mew came from inside the mask and she squirmed in the blanket. Daisy removed the O2 mask and the kitten breathed on her own. Sssufarn licked the top of her head then looked up at Daisy. “Thank you...thank you.” Sssufarn clasped the tiny kitten to her chest and kept licking her. Daisy checked the vital signs of the other kittens and their mother and was pleased. She had been so busy that she had not seen Runtawr, Moonshadows and Captain McCloud enter sickbay but when she looked up they were waiting nearby. Runtawr approached her, noticing the doctor's smile. “That look is one of pleasure?” He inquired. “Yes it's called a smile.” Daisy explained “Then they all will be okay?” He asked. “Sssufarn had a nasty head wound but it should heal well and the kittens are a little small but yes, I believe they will all be okay. I'd like to keep them all here for a couple of days to be sure.” “I can remain with them?” Runtawr asked. “Of course.” Daisy agreed. “You can bring the other three kittens to their mother now. From their mews it sounds like they're hungry. Let me give you and your companion some privacy.” Daisy gestured to the rest of the medical team and they moved out of the area, Daisy pulled a curtain around the Felusian family. She looked up and noticed the Captain and Moonshadows still waiting nearby and walked over to them. “They're fine.” She told McCloud then turned to Moonshadows. “Thank you for your efforts Lieutenant. If we hadn't gotten Sssufarn into sickbay when we did we would have lost her and the kittens.” THE END
