"Branes and Realities"
Ensign Vidya Le Beau and Commander Aeriannah Kaelyre
Muttering over her PADD but still grinning about the light in Etienne's eyes,
Vidya wound her merry way up to the XO's office. Lieutenant McEntire had sent
her with their findings and the little she remembered from her brother's work.
At first, she didn't even realize she was there, no longer thinking about the
work, but dreaming of a pair of beautiful blue eyes. Suddenly, she realized
she'd over-shot and had to double back, mumbling and rolling her eyes.

Once she got there for the second time, she rang the chime and stared at her
PADD again.

Sitting on the floor in front of her couch with her coffee table covered in
PADDs, empty coffee cups, and candy wrappers Aeriannah moaned as she laid her
head back against the couch. She was trying to focus on work and not the fact
that there was a damn good chance she was going to miss her sister's wedding.
I'm so sorry Gilly-Bean. When the door chime rang she lifted her head up but
stayed on the floor. By now everyone who knew her knew she preferred sitting
like this rather then behind a desk. "Come in."

Without looking up, Vidya wandered in and came to a rough stop near the couch.
She'd been in the office so many times that she knew its layout better than her
own quarters. "We have some ideas," was all she said as she lowered the PADD
and smiled. "We think."

"Thinking you have an idea is better then not having one at all." Aeriannah
replied as she took the PADD. She looked over it until her eyes started to
cross. Looking up at Vidya she laughed. "My Asarrah is the astrophysicist not
me, Vidya. Wanna dumb this down for me?"

"Okay, well, we had this idea, based on some stuff that my brother was faffing
about with ages ago, that maybe we just need to alter the brane we're on,"
Vidya said seriously. "It's like, we're on this membrane," she indicated with
her hands, "but we want to be on that membrane, so all we need to do is skip."

Aeriannah blinked then shook her head. "Ok so what your saying is..." She
blinked again. "That we're on the wrong layer? Layer of what?"

"Um... okay. We live in a multi-dimensional, multi-planed universe, right?"
Vidya said.

She was suddenly sitting at the kitchen table again, her eyes glazing over, and
her head filling with nonsense songs as her Asarrah tried to explain her high
school astrophysics homework. "Right." She answered as if she was for sure she
knew what she was talking about.

"Well, if that universe is a bubble, then it's pressed against lots of other
bubbles in the huge multiverse. So to get back to where we need to be, we just
need to jump from one bubble to the next," Vidya said, grinning broadly.

"And how do we make the ship bounce on the bubbles?" Aeriannah asked. Then
something triggered something in the back of her mind. "You said this is
something that your brother messed about with? Was this the same project that
made him and my Asarrah stop talking whenever someone came into the room? The
project that never happened?"

"That would be the one. He started off talking about it but then suddenly got
all secretive after a while." Vidya frowned at the memory. "I'm kind of
fudging, working out all the gaps from what I remember."

Aeriannah's eyes clouded over. "He started working for my Asarrah at Daystorm
not long after that." Looking up at Vidya she frowned. "He must have been able
to find a way to open temporal wormholes. Have you been able to work out any of
the hows?"

Vidya snorted. "You know how long it took him?"

"To long for us to try and repeat it." Diving her fingers into her long wavy
red hair, Aeriannah shook her hair out and sighed. "Ok, next question. Was the
hole opened on our side or this side? If it was opened here what are the
chances that the Marquis still have it?"

"Err... we're working on that," Vidya said slowly. "We think it was this side,
but we've no idea how at the moment."

Aeriannah sighed a deep sigh that even her Nanna Morgan would be proud of.
"There's no way this is going to happen say by the end of the week is there?"

Shaking her head slowly, Vidya sighed heavily. "Not likely, ma'am. Give us a
week and we might have a better idea of the whys and wherefores but not a
working plan on how to get us out of here. We've got the two supergeniuses
working on it, plus the whole of the Science department. Don't worry, we'll
work it out."

"I have faith in our crew Vidya." Aeriannah replied as she pushed to her feet
and walked over to her window. "I know we'll get home in time, just not in time
I guess."

"In time for what, ma'am?" Vidya asked slowly.

Aeriannah turned around and leaned against the window. "Gillian's getting
married."

"I'm sorry about that," Vidya sighed. "I guess we all have our reasons to want
to go home as soon as possible."

"That we do, Vidya." Resting her head against the glass behind her she offered
the other woman a smile. "I'll let the Captain know and you guys keep it up. Ya
know it's really to bad we can't ask for help. My parents should be on Earth by
now."

"I don't even know where Pere and Ammi are, ma'am, but I know that it's a very
long time until I'm born. Ammi may even still think she's human," Vidya mused.

Aeriannah laughed. "I bet being so close to their parents was weird as hell for
the Captain and those guys. I'm not sure what the Captain's more pissed over,
the fact that Counselor McKenna calling the Doctor McEntire of this time line
broke temporal law, or because she didn't get the chance to talk to Commander
Redgrave or Captain Davis."

"But they wouldn't be those things yet. Those people aren't the people she
knows." Vidya shrugged. "What would be the point? It's not like it would be
really be either Ammi or Pere."

"You have a point." Aeriannah nodded in agreement.

"There's one more thing, ma'am," Vidya began. "We've picked up an echo in our
wake. It could just be an effect of the Badlands. But it also looks
suspiciously like a small vessel."

Aeriannah held back the slue of Delosian and Irish curses that bubbled in her
mind. "If this is a small vessel does it appear to pose any threats?"

"Um, no, there's no trace of weaponry aboard, otherwise we'd be able to tell if
it's a vessel or not." Vidya shrugged, her long braid bouncing behind her. "But
if it's just a natural phenomenon then it seems to follow our course changes
surprisingly closely."

"See if you can't get more on it." Aeriannah told her as she went for her
uniform jacket. "Prepare and launch a probe if you have too. I'll head up to
the bridge and see if PJ can't get some kind of hit from tactical."

"Yes, ma'am," Vidya saluted and headed to the door. Pausing for a moment, she
gave the XO a soft smile before disappearing back to Engineering.

Slipping on her jacket as she headed for the door Aeriannah called out,
"Captain to the bridge." as she walked out of her office door. "We're being
tailed and I have news from the grease monkeys."

"On my way." Came the Welsh accented voice.
