And here’s another.
A group of chessplayers one checked into a hotel. Afterwards they spent a
whole hour in the lobby discussing their strategies and the various matches
they had won. Finally the manager came out and asked them to disperse. “But
why?” they asked. “Because,” said the manager, “I’m tired of chess nuts
boasting in an open foyer.”

Morphy and Paulsen were playing a match, and this was before chess clocks, so
Paulsen was thinking and concentrating and scratching his head for hours.
Morphy, being the ultimate gentleman, did not say a word until it started to
get dark. He finally spoke up and said, "Mr. Paulsen, may I please have a
move?" Paulsen replied, "Oh, I'm sorry, I thought it was your move."
*Did you know...
The longest tournament chess game (in terms of moves) ever to be played was
Nikolic--Arsovic, Belgrade 1989, which lasted for 269 moves and took 20 hours
and 15 minutes to complete a draw game. At the time this game was played, FIDE
had modified the fifty-move rule to allow 100 moves to be played without a
piece being captured in a rook and bishop versus rook endgame, the situation in
Nikolic versus Arsovic. FIDE has since rescinded that modification to the rule.
The longest game played in a World Championship is the 6th game of the 2021
World Chess Championship between Magnus Carlsen and Ian Nepomniachtchi, which
Carlsen won in 136 moves after resignation. The game lasted for 8 hours, 15
minutes and 40 seconds.
