Ok. The chess infection made me remember a true story from my scholastic
playing days. The night before the national high school championships, a
friend and I were staying at his grandparents’ house because it was close to
our departure airport. The coach called my friend’s mother, because there was
no record of the required permission slip for him to travel to the tournament.
So his grandmother wrote the slip, which we handed to the coach next morning at
the airport. He chuckled upon reading it because she had written “chest coach”
instead of chess coach.

*Fun with puns:
How come chess players have so many kids?
They mate often.
Why did the chess player get tense in a restaurant?
Because the waiter said, “Check.”
What did the Australian chess player say about the moldy bread?
“Stalemate”.
*Smile
Patient: Doctor whenever I cough it sounds like this ‘Pawn, bishop, queen.
Doctor: Sounds like you have a chess infection.
Two chess players wanted to go to a chess tournament together by car. After
some time the driver had to check his map.
“What do you think? Is it better if we take the main variation or the side
variation?”
*Did you know…
Magnus Carlsen played Kasparov in a blitz chess game in Reykjavik Rapid in
2004. Carlsen was 13 years old at the time. Magnus Carlsen managed to draw the
game. This was a remarkable achievement, as Kasparov was one of the greatest
chess players of all time and at the peak of his career. Carlsen became an
overnight sensation.
William Steinitz was the oldest World Chess Champion at 58 years old. Steinitz
had actually publicly spoken of retiring. However, when Emanuel Lasker
challenged him, he changed his mind. The player to win 10 games would be
Champion. Lasker, 32 years William’s junior, won the Championship with 10 wins,
5 losses and 4 draws. Some commentators thought Steinitz’s habit of playing
“experimental” moves in serious competition was a major factor in his downfall.
Lasker held the title for a still-record 27 years, and he did it at a time when
the rest of the chess-playing world was improving at its greatest rate.
