Today has been a busy day at the feeders here in West Roseburg, It seems spring
fever and mating has already started, birds know best. This morning the downy
woodpecker was joined by a female and they did an interesting little dance on a
limb of the sweetgum. Facing each other they bobbed there heads and hopped back
and forth, I’m assuming this was courtship.
I also have an odd ball dark eyed junco that has been here all winter. His tail
is extra long with one dominant white feather but has all the rest of the junco
markings.
Two days ago a little falcon swooped into our very large snow ball bush and
tried to stay hidden, it didn’t work very well. I have a poor quality picture
though.
Happy birding!

FYI... I had seen a flock of about two hundred tree and violet-green swallows
down at the Delevan Wildlife Refuge in Northern CA on February 11. So knew
they were on their way! :O)

Maybe this is old news. I haven’t been out much lately so I was surprised to
see a couple dozen swallows at Plat I today.
On another subject: Knowing when our winter birds leave is always more
challenging than noting their arrivals. We’ve had a white-throated sparrow
since mid Dec and I think left about two weeks ago. Meanwhile our resident
Townsend’s warbler is still here. He also arrived mid Dec. We put hard boiled
egg yolk out for him everyday … and try to keep the other birds from gobbling
it down first. For a long time he got most of the egg yolk, but then the
English Sparrows decided it is pretty good stuff. He is often out there
waiting for his next meal.
