[Umpqua Birds] AMERICAN BITTERN Plat I May 9

Jim Arneson and I were at Plat I upper (or south) pond on the road between the
two ponds yesterday (Friday May 9), when Jim recognized the call of an
unmistakable AMERICAN BITTERN in the rushes along the dam (Plat I road) on the
upper pond. Jim played an American Bittern oonk-a-loonk call and the Bittern
responded. We both heard both calls clearly.
American Bittern is a year-round resident here, but secretive and there were no
reports in Douglas County in 2013 that I know. Lane County did have some 2013
reports.
Jim and I also got a look at the Sandhill Crane and other birds reported by
Matt Hunter and Jeanne and Bob Pollock this week at Ford's Pond. Mikeal Jones
