QUESTION
With UEB do we space and use grade 1 indicator when brailling the 'single
letter' units of measure only?
E.g. 25g CM, KM etc. are used unspaced?
ANSWER
The rule in UEB regarding whether or not you need a grade 1 indicator is, to
use one only if needed.
So, for example, assuming you are in contracted braille, you would need a grade
1 indicator before any standing alone letter (except a, I and o) or if you have
a letter a-j immediately after a digit.
So, for example, compare the following four pairs of units:
50 m (spaced): grade 1 needed before m
50m (unspaced): no grade 1 indicator needed.
50 cm (spaced): no grade 1 indicator needed
50cm (unspaced) grade 1 indicator needed.
50 g (spaced) grade 1 indicator needed
50g (unspaced) grade 1 indicator also needed
50 kg (spaced) no grade 1 indicator needed
50kg (unspaced) still no grade 1 indicator needed.
So, use the grade 1 indicator only when needed.
