Hi Katherine,
I am cross-posting your question to UEB-ED, a list for discussing UEB questions
like this.
In short, your expression:
12+3 = ?
only needs the grade 1 indicator before the question mark.
According to the UKAAF guidelines (well done for finding them), this is the
case where a single instance of a grade 1 indicator is used in a "letter"
standing alone.
I am interpreting ? as a letter, because in more advanced maths it would be
written as x with exactly the same mathematical meaning.
So:
#ab"6#c "7 ;8
I trust this helps.
With best regards,
James.

Subject: [The VI Forum] Technical Braille query
I am forwarding a query from one of my colleagues regarding the correct Braille
(following UKAAF guidelines) for the following expression:
12+3 = ?
A grade 1 symbol indicator is needed to stop the question mark meaning ‘his’.
As this indicator is not within the first 3 Braille cells and there are spaces
in the Braille expression, would members agree that, following UKAAF
guidelines, this expression should be Brailled as a grade 1 passage?
UKAAF guidelines would appear to allow the expression 12+3 = x to be Brailled
with just a grade 1 symbol indicator before the ‘x’. (As only one instance of a
grade 1 symbol indicator is needed before a ‘single letter standing alone’ in
this expression.)
Thank you for your advice!
