[u3aavcuss] Windows Updates will not install

Dear Friends,
For about the past month my Windows Updates Vista downloads, will not install -
they download, create a restore point & look as though they are about to
complete the installation process, following which I receive a message "Failed"
. I have on my machine a long list of Failed Downloads.
I have tried a Microsoft "Fix it" which did not work. I've also tried
temporarily disabling my AVG 2012, still no luck with the download
installation. I've cleared my browsing history in IE 9 to see if that might
help, all to no avail.
The error code I am receiving is: 8E5E03FA - Windows Update encountered an
unknown error.
I'm running Windows Vista Service Pack 2 & IE 9.
Any help / guidance which may resolve this problem would be greatly appreciated.
