Everyone,
Happy Mother’s Day! This coming weekend is the Chenoweth Trails campout. This
past Saturday, Kristin Keiser and I went to check the place out. This is the
nicest camping location we have ever been to!
We m.i.g.h.t. need some parents to help drive to/from Meijer’s on Friday and
then on Sunday. Let’s see how it goes on Friday, but please be prepared if we
need another driver for transport! Maybe not, so let’s just play it by ear for
now.
At Monday’s Scout meeting, I will have release forms for everyone to sign, we
need one per Scout/Adult that is going. So please find me on Monday night if I
do not find you. Otherwise, we can have them signed on Friday when we meet up
to leave, no worries either way.
These facilities are free for us if we take care of them (plus, we want them to
keep allowing us to come back!), and we have to clean up before we leave –
small amounts of cleaning and mopping. What a nice place. Even if it rains –
the pavilion area will fit us all! And the Yurts don’t leak, there is a
shower, and flushable toilets, on and on!
I will talk with Jonathon and the Scouts at tomorrow’s meeting about the plans
while we are there – so we have time for both free-time fun AND requirements
for the Scouts that are not yet First Class.
A few highlights/unusual things about this camping location:
· THEY HAVE A FLAG/FLAG POLE! YAE! We can do all the flag
requirements now!!!!!!
· BRING RUBBER BOOTS – there is mud on the trails
· Scouts will camp in the Yurts, adults will camp either in tents
(bring a tent!) OR if all the Scouts can fit in one Yurt, some adults could
usurp the other Yurt
· No cots needed for the Scouts at least – Each Yurt has 6 bunk beds
with twin mattresses – so they sleep 12 Scouts per Yurt (2 Yurts). Bring a
twin-bed fitted sheet and then just put the sleeping bag on top of that.
· They have two refrigerators, two indoor-ovens, a couple of outdoor
LARGE grills, and even an outdoor pizza oven you make a fire in.
· They have all the balls needed for the Gaga Ball circle
· There is a pond – it is a bit far away, I’m not sure if we want to
fish or will get to that. We can talk Monday. If so, we need to bring our own
fishing gear
· Most of the stuff is in one area, everyone can hang out there as
normal., but if the Scouts want to go on the trails, etc, they would prefer
adults go with them. So we can work that out, no problem.
· There is an amphitheater with a fire pit – Jonathon will be talking
to the Scouts on Monday night, we would love to have a campfire ceremony there,
or even an Interfaith ceremony. Just such a nice setting!

o GPS does not always get a great signal as you approach the camp area – so
if you are driving outside of the ‘caravan’ might want to print out a copy of
the map. Also, the road signs are not always on both sides of the road, so
when looking for a turn, might look on both right/left of your current location.

Two-Night Camping (Not Cold Weather, Not High-Adventure) Checklist for
Chenoweth Trails:
· Try to wear a Class-B Scout shirt (T-shirt with any type of Scout
logo/info on it)
· Scout Handbook
· Sleeping Bag
· Twin mattress – fitted sheet (no big deal if not)
· Rain Poncho/Rain Jacket
· Sweatshirt, Jacket or lightweight coat – look up the weather
temperature
· Pillow
· Flashlight
· Pocket Knife, if you have one
· Camp chair – if you have one, and you do not keep yours in the Scout
Trailer. We might not need these for Chenoweth Trails, there are plenty of
picnic tables under the pavailion, up to you
· Water bottle – optional, just if you want one, we will have water in
coolers and cups there
· Rubber boots – if you have some
· Waterproof footwear – if possible
· Two sets of clothes
· One or two extra pair of socks
· Hat
