From their press release ... Tiny babies and Neonatal Staff will be making a special journey as they move into their brand new £7million home on Wednesday 8th September. The new Neonatal Unit which will be the new and greatly improved home for the many premature and sick babies cared for at Birmingham Women’s Hospital in Edbaston. It has taken two years to build and includes quiet flooring and inbuilt computers in the intensive care cots. Over 24 premature and sick newborns will be carefully transferred to the unit in a precisely planned operation involving over 30 nurses and doctors as well as support staff and medical engineers. Demand for neonatal cots has grown year on year as the birth rate has risen and it has been possible to treat increasingly small and younger babies than ever before. The new unit will have the capacity for 50 cots including up to 26 intensive and high dependency care cots, to meet the growing demand for specialist care. More than 800 babies are treated in the Birmingham Women’s Hospital neonatal unit every year. Some babies just need a little extra support during their first few days of life while the smallest and sickest babies need intensive care for several months before they are well enough to go home. Chief Executive Steve Peak commented, “It is a great day to have the unit open on time and to see the neonatal team move into their new home. The new facilities will be a significant improvement for our parents, families and all the staff. Improved capacity will mean that we will be able to treat and care for more babies in the future in our state of the art Neonatal Unit.” * * * * * This message came via the Children's Transport Group Mailing List.
