Liz, I guess I assumed "home churches" in the US meant only with your
immediate family. I don't think that model is displayed in the New Testament. I
get it for times when people are snowed in or sickness and not everyone goes to
church, but not for a regular basis. I think the community of believers is
vital to our spiritual growth.
Renee, thanks for sharing. Geoff has always hated how expensive a church is to
run physically. You pay for land, building materials to build a structure where
150-5,000 people can meet, and it's used that way for 2-3 hours a week. It
seems very wasteful. Being in a small town hinders us from doing so, but he's
thought of ways such as office space that the building could be used/rented
during M-F to help with that waste.
In our church of 130-150, there are so many who choose not use their spiritual
gifts - I know his church is bigger, but I think that is a mentality of our
culture-many people see church as a way to get, and never give. Our church has
this idea that at age 50-55, you retire from helping at church - no teaching,
no nursery help, no helping on work days for building upkeep. I understand that
sometimes physical aspects can begin hindering you from playing leap frog w/
the youth group at that age, but you haven't retired from doing dishes or
cleaning your house at that age. Also, Geoff and I try to be careful not
volunteer for everything so that people don't get used to thinking that we'll
do it all. The body should work together, and it's so neat when it does!

That was interesting. I've always heard that home churches were not what we're
supposed to be doing, but I agree with him on the emptiness of mega churches.
