Renee, I wish I knew how to delete that last line. :( It probably sounds so
snarky. I promise that wasn't my intention. I am actually all wired up on a
green tea, and my mind is firing too fast. Brian thinks it's funny, but I
probably shouldn't have tried e-mailing anyone!

Anyway, I am interested to know you have found a church because I love you
and want you in a good Body that can serve you and be blessed by you. I
just totally didn't mean it to come out the way it did. Will you forgive me?

Love you,
Carrie

This is pretty cool. It reminds me of a book I have been reading. Have you
heard of the Trellis and the Vine?

Not sure who found it first, but our lead pastor was reading it with the
ladies group leaders. One of them gave me an extra copy. It ROCKS the
church world view that I grew up with. It talks about how the Western
church has become all about the programs and structure of the church
(trellis) and not about the people (vine). It also gives a plan for
changing that. It doesn't throw the trellis out, but it does put it in its
place and sets up serious discipleship within the Body.

Pam, you should have your old people listen to some of Colin Smith's
stuff. In their church they view "retirement" as more time to serve the
Body. I listened to him on the radio a lot for a while and read some of his
books. When they got my number because I bought a book, I had retirees
calling me periodically just to ask what they could pray for me about. It
was crazy! And sweet. I want to be them when I get old! Still serving in
some way. (Though I do kind of hope I don't have to do nursery. It already
freaks me out! Eww!)

Renee, any luck finding a church (home or otherwise)?

Love you all!

Carrie

Liz, I guess I assumed "home churches" in the US meant only with your
immediate family. I don't think that model is displayed in the New
Testament. I get it for times when people are snowed in or sickness and not
everyone goes to church, but not for a regular basis. I think the community
of believers is vital to our spiritual growth.

Renee, thanks for sharing. Geoff has always hated how expensive a church
is to run physically. You pay for land, building materials to build a
structure where 150-5,000 people can meet, and it's used that way for 2-3
hours a week. It seems very wasteful. Being in a small town hinders us from
doing so, but he's thought of ways such as office space that the building
could be used/rented during M-F to help with that waste.

In our church of 130-150, there are so many who choose not use their
spiritual gifts - I know his church is bigger, but I think that is a
mentality of our culture-many people see church as a way to get, and never
give.  Our church has this idea that at age 50-55, you retire from helping
at church - no teaching, no nursery help, no helping on work days for
building upkeep. I understand that sometimes physical aspects can begin
hindering you from playing leap frog w/ the youth group at that age, but
you haven't retired from doing dishes or cleaning your house at that age.
Also, Geoff and I try to be careful not volunteer for everything so that
people don't get used to thinking that we'll do it all. The body should
work together, and it's so neat when it does!

Pam

That was interesting. I've always heard that home churches were not what
we're supposed to be doing, but I agree with him on the emptiness of mega
churches.
