Simon,
Perhaps the bin files are wrong. You should try only to copy the MCM ROM's
Next, check the speed of the MCM ROM's. You already told us the ST ROM's are
350nS, but what are the MCM ROM's?
I suspect 350nS is probably fast enough, but you must compare. Sorry, I don't
have detailed knowledge about this drive, but I'm just trying to help you
logicially figure this out by changing things 1 step at a time and avoid the
TMS2716 trap.
PS. TL866 programmer is very nice, good purchase!
Cheers,
Josh

Hi Josh
To answer your questions:
So, you tried the MCM roms on the drive, they work, you copied these ROM's to
the ST and verified OK, but the ST ROM's don't work?
==> I Got the .bin files off the net and burned them to the ST 2716 roms and
the drive did not work.
Have you gone back to verify the MCM roms are still working?
==> MCM roms still working when in the drive and the drive works fine with them
Then, have you re-verified the ST ROM's?
==> ST Roms never worked but I read the info on them and they match the .bin
file info

Hi,
The MCM2716 should be compatible with the ST2716. Some EPROM's have faster
programming algorithms, but they should all work with the standard. The only
2716's you must watch out for are the TMS2716 chips from Texas Instruments and
Motorola.
Motorola made both the MCM and TMS, the TMS versions (TI and M) use 3 voltage
supplies.
There are no current day equivelent, they just don't make EPROMS this small
anymore.
However, you might find adaptors that will let you plug in a 27128 or 27256
into the 24 pin socket.
But that is too much messing around when you can easily find lots of 2716's
around.
So, you tried the MCM roms on the drive, they work, you copied these ROM's to
the ST and verified OK, but the ST ROM's don't work?
Have you gone back to verify the MCM roms are still working? Then, have you
re-verified the ST ROM's?
I'm guessing you did all those above steps, in which case, I would conclude
this drive has other issues, perhaps a gate on the bus is drawing too much
current and only the MCM chip can produce enough drive. Do you have other
drives to verify?
I just recommend trying different EPROM's.
Good Luck
Josh

I bought a universal rom programmer from China and it works well reading the
old chips from c64 oand others . I know the Motorola mcm2716 eprom works on the
old c64 and 1541 drives etc. So I I purchased the st 2716 eproms as well since
the data sheets match I thought . I tried burning some roms and it didn't seem
to work .
Does anybody know if the mcm2716 is compatible with the st 2716 ?
Is there any eproms that someone can recommend that are current day equivalent ?
Thanks

I posted this on Lemon 64 but I think TPUG members may be able to provide a
better answer since many users are here in Canada so MUST have some Members
that have had to solve the same issue below:
Okay, I broke down and decided to buy an EPROM Burner and it'll take a little
time to ship of course). Now, I want mainly to burn Kernal ROMs for my 1541C's
which drive knock every time I turn them on for starters. Also have a dead
Char. ROM or 2 etc. So aside from fixing those and tinkering with making some
Carts I also want to play with making a few PLAs using the AT27C512R-45 chip so
what do you recommend cause I've found some listings:
1) 10pcs/lot M27C256B-10F1 M27C256B 27C256 DIP-28 IC
2) 10PCS M27C128-10F1 27C128
3) AM27C256-150D AM27C256 27C256
Just to list a few but obviously these seem to ALL be sourced from China and
I've read stories where ppl swear they're recycled parts.
Any links and/or recommendations would GREATLY be welcome especially given the
above applications I have for my future EPROM Burner. Especially source and
Brand.
Just keep in mind I'm in North America.
Thanks.
-Mark.
