Wow fast shipping…. That’s crazy…. ( I’ve been waiting almost a week for my
Briel Altair 8800micro replica kit just to clear customs, it to shipped via
USPS…)

I just got the Sole monitor today. ☺

Now I just have to make sure I did not get rid of the scart cable I had (
thinking I would never use one…)

Hi Walter,

It can handle all NTSC and PAL modes with 15.60 or 15.72 kHz.

The highest I can see is:

PAL Super High Res Laced - 1280 x 512 @ 15.60 kHz with no flickering
By adjusting the overscan I can set it to 1372 x 548

Since that's wider than 1366 of the panel it must be shrinking it down
slightly, but it looks very nice.

What is the highest resolution the The RGB input on the scart connector can
handle?
If you hook it up to the Amiga 1200 23 pin monitor out, what resolutions have
you tried via scart RGB input?

Some followup. Still playing with the Sole monitor.

I reconnected the Amiga 1200HD and sure enough I had it set to VGA output,
which did not work on the SCART connection. Hooking up commodore's vga adapter
and a cable to the Sole gave me a picture. By adjusting the screen prefs I
determined that the VGA supports signals approximately 24 kHz and up (which is
typical). So to support all Amiga 1200/4000 screenmodes you'd have to make a
custom cable that connected both SCART and VGA. Of course if your main reason
to use the 1200 is for games then the 15kHz SCART RGB should be fine.

I also verified that the SCART connection also supports S-Video, giving a
pretty good picture.

Hi,

I just received my SCART to HDMI converter today. I also found my SCART cables.
Ya! I did a little quick testing.

First I tried connecting up to my Polaroid TV with scart. I knew this TV was
not the highest quality, but it's on my desk and has every imaginable input on
the back so it's handy to have while experimenting. Unfortunately I got no
picture at all with the converter. I removed the converter and verified that it
was working with SCART directly into the TV and that worked fine (with C64). I
tried the C128 but for some reason it's not powering on. I don't know if it's
the power supply or the computer. It was actually working earlier today when I
was testing the scart cable and worked fine in 80 column mode, but not in
40-column mode. I suspect the SCART cable is not wired for 40 column. There
were several versions of SCART cables and I guess I got the wrong one. Will
need to pull out another C128 and power supply...

Anyway, moving to the other side of the room is my main computer with DELL 22"
HDMI monitor. Hooking up the C64 through the scart converter to the monitor
hdmi was finicky but eventually I got it to work. Next I moved on to my Amiga
500... success again! Amiga 1200HD... no go. It boots and I can see a screen
colour change on the monitor, and some streaks, but no workbench. It's been a
while, but perhaps I have the preferences set to some weird video mode. I will
need to pull out a real 1084 or 1950 to check what's going on.

Anyway, I verified that the SCART to HDMI supports composite and RGB. Hopefully
I can sort out the other issues and complete my testing. If anyone wants me to
test a particular setup let me know.

For a good display you should select the best output from your device. From
lowest to highest quality:

RF, composite, s-video, component, rgb, vga, dvi, displayport, hdmi. (the
last few are roughly equivalent)

So, RGB is the highest quality signal available on the Amiga. RGB via Scart is
pretty much the same. A very limited number of VGA monitors can handle RGB at
15kHz, but most VGA monitors only handle 30kHz or higher.

I seem to have misplaced my scart cables, but when I find them I will do some
testing and take some pics. I have Amiga, AtariST and C128 scart cables. C128
RGB is digital (actually RGBI or CGA) so it needs a bit of conversion first.

Well, like i mentioned earlier, scart is a connector that supports multiple
inputs and outputs; composite, s-video (y/c), component, and rgb as well as
audio in/out. There are also additional control signals for things like
selecting screen aspect and even overlays. Not every scart tv supports all
features though. Anyway, what is useful for Amiga people is the RGB input,
which supports the 15kHz scanning frequency that the Amiga uses. In north
america scart is uncommon, so most people the only option to connect an amiga
to an lcd is to use composite video, which is low quality ( plus the Amiga 500
only outputs monochrome composite, thus the need for the 520 adapter) or use a
scan-doubler to convert the 15kHz to 30kHz for output to a vga monitor. A
scart-capable tv eliminates the need for the scan-doubler.

TV worth $100 more than that adapter and an Svideo cable feeding a regular $75

I have a couple of those. They allow you to either feed composite video into a
scart port or get composite out. Since scart supports composite already, this
is just a passive adapter.

It's an 18.5" widescreen tv from for USD$50 and comes with a SCART input. For
those looking for an amiga monitor this should work nicely via scart. it also
has all the normal video inputs, like composite, component, hdmi and vga. The
only thing it needs is a stand. Oh, don't bother with the "best offer option"
as it will auto-decline anything below $48. With shipping and money conversion
it'll be about $120 CAD (plus import fees maybe).

I'll give a report on how it works when mine arrives ;-)
