Hi Steve & All,
I have changed my settings to daily digest, so I don't mind getting the FOY &
county records. I think it is all very useful information.

While taking part in the Rusty Blackbird Blitz in Warren County
yesterday, Ed LeGrand and I were also on the lookout for early
butterflies, and we were rewarded by a nice Mourning Cloak, which Ed
first found, identified, and then photographed. The photo proved
useful, since Mourning Cloak is a species that was not on the Warren
County butterfly list at the BAMONA website, but it will be very
shortly.

I note that Jeff Basham photographed a Mourning Cloak in Polk County
Saturday, so Ed and I did not get the first Tennessee sighting of the
year of this stunning butterfly, which is always among the earliest to
appear in TN; adults are able to overwinter and emerge on warm days to
brighten up the winter woods.

Let's hear more about the 'flies that were seen this past week-end.

I originally suggested the creation of this listserv so that the emails
that were coming to me alone about first of year (FOY) sightings and
county records (for BAMONA) and that I then summarized and redistributed
would simply go to the members on the list (and I would pick up whatever
I needed in the process). This will mean that folks will get a lot of
email, especially as the butterfly season gets intense. I do not know
if this will cause a hardship for folks on the list or not.

would like to see county records for BAMONA handled, and I will do my
best to accommodate. Being somewhat burdened with other tasks (and that
job that pays the bills), I had wanted to find a way to get FOY data and
county record data without the time-consuming task of synthesizing all
the records for a week or a month, and I would still prefer that if at
all possible.

Anyway, drop a line if you plan to be part of the group that submits FOY
sightings and/or county record sightings and let me k now your thoughts.

Note: emails with lots of photos attached tend to cause emailboxes to
fill up fast, so we should probably all be judicious about communicating
in that way. There are lots of free places to post photos if there is a
need to make them available. Steve

It's official now. I just spotted 4 Question Marks in the same area I saw
the one flying last Friday. It's still early so I expect to see more as the
day warms up.

I went back out and photographed this 'fly. It didn't close it's
wings so I couldn't see the mark on the underside but it doesn't have
the dash near the tip of the forewing and the tail is shorter than on the
QM's I saw earlier.

Hi Ken,

Definitely an Eastern Comma; nice photo. Am assuming this photo was
taken today. When did you have the for-certain QM?

I saw the 4 QM's about an hour before I took this shot.
I went for a quick look this morning and didn't see anything. About an hour
after that I was out working and noticed the first 2 QM's so I took a look
around that area and saw 2 more. All were sunning themselves on a walking path I
have cut around the property. When I started to get close they would pump their
wings so I got a good look at their "?" marking.

I've been looking every hour or so and this comma was the last 'fly I
saw so I'm glad I started looking early.

I have to agree here. And also take into consideration that most of us have
seen a MUCH colder winter without any butterflies for months now and
therefore, the emails were few and far between. I think we are seeing the
excitement of a new year and first sighting postings right now, but would
not consider this to be the norm for the listserv once everyone is seeing
butterflies every day. I have yet to see my first one of the year at all.
It will probably pick up heavily again once we near the count season, but
that's probably a good thing. Just my 2 cents worth in a non-moderator
perspective anyway. I especially like seeing the pics (snakes! Yesss!) and
would rather see my inbox full of those than "Hello, just a kind note from

Honda letting you know your car payment is now 2 weeks late....again...and
please pay your cable bill too....thanks..."

Haha....
