Well, I’m not surprised. The shape looked odd for the butterfly, but I have
never seen the butterfly anyway. I’m still happy to have seen such a beautiful
insect. It is without a doubt the most colorful moth I have ever seen. That
also explains why there were no other butterflies around so early in the
morning.

that I have also seen there at Longpine Key. It is called the Faithful Beauty.
Very pretty moth. You really won't see Atalas unless there is coontie around.

These are bad pictures of a rare Atala butterfly which caught me by
surprise when I was at Longpine Key Campground in the Everglades a couple of
days ago. It was just past 7 AM when the butterfly was attracted to my
yellow shirt. It flew away and I was able to get these blurred photos
before it left. It was strikingly beautiful. There were no flowers
blooming in the area.
