this evening (saturday) at about 6 oclock while waiting in the car for my son (the world's slowest shopper) to finish his tour of walmart in lebanon, i saw a large flock of very fluttery birds swoop over the store and circle around to land in a bradford pear tree near my car. i thought i recognized the little masked creatures but got out and walked over under their tree and sure enough it was about 50 cedar waxwings. they all few away after about 4-5 minutes heading south southwest then about 5 minutes later a larger flock did the same thing (about 150 i'd guess). after they flew away (usually when someone nearby loudly closed a car door) i soon noticed about 200 of them lined up side by side by side along the front edge of the roof of the store-amazing sight-they left about 1/2 inch between themselves. soon they all flew to the pear tree and left at the usual time-about 4 minutes later. this phenomenon continued at consistent intervals til nearly 7 pm and in all i'd estimate there were approximately 3000 of them. every time they flew off to the SSW. the only time i've ever seen flocks of them before in my lifetime was outside my lab window where i was working in dallas TX so i have to assume these birds were possibly on their way to "big D". i don't know that much about birds yet but it surely was a migration of the cedar waxwings otherwise i don't think there would have been so many, all doing the same thing, for such a long time. i thought it was completely fascinating! jan donaldson watertown, TN wilson county =================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBER===================== The TN-Bird Net requires you to SIGN YOUR MESSAGE with first and last name, CITY (TOWN) and state abbreviation.
