Yesterday evening at dusk I was just stepping off the back step in the light rain. I heard an odd animal sound & saw movement near my feet. For a moment I thought it was a frog-then realized it was a hummer that had been on the ground. It flew off & landed in the nearby redbud, a favorite place of hummers that visit the feeder close to the steps. I wondered if it could have been drinking water that had puddled? I couldn't figure out any other reason for that behavior. I was particularly surprised since one of the dogs was under the porch sleeping out of the rain.
