On Friday, April 3, 2009, there are now five adult Yellow-crowned Night-Herons at the West Nashville breeding site, two pairs and a single. One pair was at a last year's nest with one bird in the nest and the other standing right beside it. This is the original pair for the year of March 26, previously reported. The other pair was preening each other. The single was standing around looking pretty...and hoping. This breeding site has been active for a few years and is located in a residential area. The nest trees are large hackberries, a typical nest tree for the species in this area as older specimens of this tree have large branches that allow the birds, both adults and young, to walk around in the tree, a typical trait of the species.
