From the Alabama bird listservŠ.Mark your calendar for the 3rd annual
Festival of the Cranes, January 9-10 2016 at Wheeler National Wildlife
Refuge. For the first time the festival will be two days, Saturday and
Sunday. The weekend's activities include appearances by Teddy Roosevelt
(portrayed by Joe Weigand) always a big hit at previous festivals; Auburn
University's Southeastern Raptor Rehabilitation Center live raptor show;
talks by Dr. George Archibald with the International Crane Foundation and
other events, as well as activities for the kids. As always, the main
attraction continues to be the birds. Wheeler already has welcomed over
2000 Sandhill cranes and at least four endangered whooping cranes so far
this season. American white pelicans, snow geese, ducks, geese and other
waterfowl are abundant on the refuge this time of year and can be viewed up
close from the Observation Building. Come on out for the festivities!
Admission is free!
