May 19-20, 2007 Ensley Bottoms Shelby Co, TN Total numbers from day to day now, are in a constant state of flux, as more species' numbers dwindle while a push of late migrant species make their pulse felt. Black-necked Stilt nest numbers increase with 24 counted on Sunday. Killdeer also are having an increase in nesting after the early spring spurt. The Mallard, Wood Duck, Hooded Merganser and Canada Goose broods are to be joined by at least one group of Blue-winged Teal as a female was inadvertently flushed from a nest holding 8 eggs. I suspected as much as 2 males have been seen hanging around after their mass exodus over a week ago. The single calling Black-bellied Plover seen Friday afternoon, left the area over night, as predicted. Over all, Wind Bird numbers were down with 1 Solitary, 1 Spotted, 2 Pectoral, 1 Western Sandpiper, 6 Dunlin, 2 Stilt Sandpiper, 1 Short-billed Dowitcher, 1 Greater Yellowlegs and 4 Lesser Yellowlegs the high numbers seen on Sunday. Least Sandpiper numbers dwindle but some are in fantastic and colorful dress while Semipalmated numbers increase and now rule the numbers game with a diversity of styles and colors that keep you transfixed, wondering how they figure it all out themselves. There is always more to learn. For the first time, Sunday saw a decline in White-rumped Sandpipers since their earlier than usual pass through started but I'm sure there will be other increases and declines until the last dribble through in mid June. Semipalmated Plovers slowly decline as these TOO cute pacers, continue their signature calls as they go from bathing areas to their preferred feeding spots on the flats. Wind Bird species numbers just barely hanging in there at Fifteen as the tide ebbs............. Good Birding !!! Jeff R.
