Percy Warner Park, Mossy Ridge Trail
Nashville-Davidson Co. TN
Monday 29 May 2006
This morning while hiking the Mossy Ridge Trail at Warner Park in
Nashville, I was alerted to the agitated "chep" of several birds right along
the trail. All of a sudden, an adult male Kentucky Warbler flew low right in
front of me, landing in the path. On the ground the agitated bird spread his
wings and moved along with his wings open flicking his tail. He was within five
feet of me as I stood motionless. It almost appeared as if the bird were
injured or perhaps doing a sort of "Killdeer broken-wing act".
Then immediately to my left, in a near-by branch, a second adult male
Kentucky Warbler landed, very agitated. The black feathers on his head were
raised like those of a Ruby-crowned Kinglet. He constantly flicked his tail and
"chepped". At this point, the bird on the ground flew up, landing in a near-by
branch. His head feathers were raised and he too was very agitated and fussy.
I continued down the path a few yards to give the birds some room, but the
fussing and commotion continued as these two birds flittered and fussed
affording the best views I have ever had of this elusive warbler. After a few
minutes, with the continuing commotion fading into the distance, I continued my
hike.
